What are good search engine rankings?
I often get asked if I can get somebody to Number One on the search
engines. Everyone seems to want to be in the number one position. This is
quite understandable of course, but it just isn't realistically possible
for most web sites, especially if you are trading in a highly competitive
field. For instance, a simple search for "web design companies" on MSN
Search returns over 5 million results. Hmmm, I think there must be
4,999,999 disappointed companies out there.
In reality though, we should not aim for Number One as it usually
doesn't happen - or does it? I generally find that if you optimize your
web site for its content only, highlighting your products and/or services
accurately with good descriptive text, you will tend to get better results
in various areas. I very often see a client in a #1 position for search
phrase that I didn't particularly optimize for. The search engine just
happened to consider the text copy content and interpreted it slightly
differently thus a #1 ranking for a different search term. A nice search
engine bonus!
I always advise my clients to be a little more realistic in their
expectations, and to understand that not everyone can be on the first
page. Searchers will go back four or five pages if they cannot find what
they want on the first page. Initially, I am happy if I can get you in the
the top 50 results for most of your search terms. But sometimes it does
need several tweaks and updates to keep you moving towards the top pages.
