How do I optimize my web
site? Firstly, you have to have a good idea of what the search engine
spiders do when they crawl your site. Most of them look for text content
mainly, but some - like Google - also look at various file names and log
those as well. The spider crawls your site noting key phrases, their
positions on the page, and also their repeat rate. The text copy is by far
the most important aspect to a search engine spider. Some search engines
also look at, and take note of, the ALT descriptive text that accompanies
graphics (if used). The spider also looks at the code of your web site -
the stuff that the visitor doesn't see - and takes note of that too. Such
code is usually placed in Meta Tags. However, many search engines do not
now attach any importance to meta tag contents; some don't even look at
them anymore.. So, knowing roughly how a search engine spider will look
at your web site, you then set about preparing suitable text copy to
describe the subject of each page on your site. Now this is the difficult
part because you have to know what the search engines are looking for.
Most search engine optimizing companies are able to track what search
terms are being used and what aren't. This provides a good foundation in
deciding what search terms to optimize your web site for. For instance, if
you were selling red bicycles and nobody ever searched for red bicycles,
it would be pointless optimizing for that phrase, You would be better off
looking at say, red racing bicycles and red mountain bikes, knowing that
racing bicycles and mountain bikes are far more likely to be searched for.
Optimizing a web site can take quite some time because all search engines
are different in the way they return their search engine rankings. Google
looks at things far differently to Yahoo and MSN. Sometimes you can get
good rankings on Google and not too good on MSN or Yahoo, or vice versa. I
usually find that you need to tweak them each month until you have got
good overall search engine rankings. It is definitely not a case of
optimize one time and it is done. It might take two or three tries to get
it right. Please do not hesitate to
