Will web advertisement help my site?

Yes and no, really. It all depends on your site, what you are selling, the competitiveness of your market, and the popularity of your web site.

If you are in a highly competitive market, then you may well find larger companies running these same advertisements - like the ones on Google known as Adword and the ones on Yahoo also. Larger companies have larger budgets and can therefore afford to bid much higher than you may be able to. The positioning of those ads depend on the amount the advertiser is prepared to bid. The highest bidder for a particular search term gets the top ad spot on the page. In a really competitive market, you might not be able to compete with the big boys and subsequently find your ad down on page 15 where the majority of people will not see it. If you are in a highly competitive market, you would be better served to find some niche terms for your web site that others might not think of and bid a low price to get a high spot - mainly because the big boys have not thought of that search term.

For instance: in the travel industry every term is competitive. It seems the world is full of lawyers, realtors and travel agents. On Google the search phrase "travel to Britain" attracts lots of advertisers down their pages. However, the search term "traveling to Britain" does not have any more than 4 ads at the time or writing. See how you can start to at least get "some" cheaper ads in there to get you started. Don't forget, if nobody clicks on those ads you don't get charged a bean. Pretty safe bet I reckon.

If, however, you have a brand new web site, and you are anxious to get going quickly, and your market is not too competitive, then an initial Adwords campaign on Google can get you kick-started pretty quickly until the search engine work kicks in on its own. Google Adwords need not be too expensive either.

As with everything else regarding your web site, advertising, optimizing etc., everything CAN be done and cost effectively too. There are ways and means of doing everything. Sometimes it takes a little more thought and patience.
