What Exactly Is Search Engine Optimization?

Simply put, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the art of adding, adjusting, tweaking and manipulating the contents of web sites, so they will influence the majority of search engines to return your web site with high search engine rankings from given searches that might relate to the contents of those pages. Having high web site rankings will certainly affect the amount of traffic your site receives.

Many small business web design companies do a nice job of designing their webs - they have lots of graphics and look quite pretty etc., but many would not attract a search engine if you sent it an invitation to your birthday party. Web design and SEO are very different things. Companies that are serious in getting their sites recognized by the search engines pay far more to optimize them than they did to design them. If you are serious about generating business from your web site, then you have no option: optimize or the site gets no visitors.

Then you can start checking how it is ranking you for all your search terms. Then you start tweaking your text - adding, subtracting, improving etc., and wait for the search engine to come round again and start again. I usually tell all clients that it can take up to 6 months to see some proper action. It is worth the wait though.
